SSDL invents RCV2 for Better Place Australia

The challenge – easy video communication during pandemic

For people living in retirement communities, lockdowns during the Covid-19 pandemic were isolating and stressful. Visits from family and friends, as well as appointments with counsellors, went on hold at a time when human connection was more important than ever.

Better Place Australia, a provider of support services for aged care, quickly recognised a need for a user-friendly technology solution that allowed residents to connect with their most important people. They briefed us to invent an all-in-one communication solution for aged care facilities and villages.

Our solution – the RCV2 mobile unit

Our senior engineers embraced this project with enthusiasm and set about curating components for the unit, which they named RCV2 (a salute to RTD2). Once best-practice components were identified and sourced, everything came together to create an easy-to-use mobile unit that supports major communication platforms, including Zoom, Teams and Google Meet. The interface was customised and locked down, to guarantee secure access and prevent unauthorised usage. We built a total of X RCV2s for Better Place Australia’s customers.

The outcome – enhanced wellbeing for isolated residents

The RCV2 mobile unit successfully addressed the challenges posed by the pandemic, enabling residents to keep in touch with their families and counsellors. Better Place Australia reported a positive impact on the wellbeing of residents, highlighting the unit's role in fostering communication, family connections and reducing feelings of isolation.

The RCV2 is not just a communication tool; it’s a lifeline connecting aged-care residents to families, friends and counsellors. It provided a sense of normalcy during one of the world’s most challenging times.
